How to Choose a COD Verification App for Shopify

10 minutes read
Choosing an app
Pick for your
problem, not the list.
Summary

Every COD app vendor publishes a ranked list with themselves at the top, including ours — so this is not one. These are the five questions that actually determine fit, what to check for yourself, and the cases where COD King is the wrong tool.

If you search for the best Shopify COD verification app, almost every result you will read is published by one of the apps being ranked. The rankings are not coincidental. We make one of these apps, so treat this page with the same scepticism — what follows is a set of questions you can answer yourself, and an honest account of where we fit and where we do not.

The five questions that decide the fit

1. Which problem are you actually solving?

The apps in this category look similar and do quite different things. Sort them by the problem they were built for.

Verification tools confirm orders before dispatch via OTP, WhatsApp, SMS, or automated call. If your RTO is driven by low-intent orders, this is the core capability.

COD form and upsell tools replace Shopify’s checkout with a custom one-page form, usually optimised for single-product dropshipping funnels, with upsells attached. If your goal is raising average order value on cold traffic, that is a different product from a verification tool, even though both say COD on the tin.

Payment-side tools handle COD fees, partial payments, and prepaid conversion inside Shopify’s own checkout. If your problem is payment mix rather than fake orders, this is the relevant group.

Checkout replacements — the GoKwik and ShopFlo tier — take over the whole checkout and bundle COD intelligence into a broader conversion product. Heavier to adopt, more comprehensive, and generally aimed at larger brands.

Many Indian D2C brands need the first and third together. Many dropshipping stores need the second. Buying across the wrong group is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category.

2. Does it keep Shopify’s native checkout?

This is the sharpest dividing line and it is a genuine trade-off, not a feature gap.

Apps that work inside Shopify’s checkout preserve Shop Pay, your existing payment methods, Shopify’s own fraud analysis, and anything else built on native checkout. Less control over the form, more compatibility with everything else.

Apps that replace checkout with a custom COD form give you complete control over fields, layout, and upsells. They also mean you are no longer in Shopify’s checkout, with consequences for analytics attribution, some apps, and certain payment methods.

Neither is correct in the abstract. A dropshipping funnel selling one product to cold traffic benefits from a custom form. An established brand with a working checkout, a Shop Pay base, and a stack of integrations usually should not rip it out. Decide this before comparing features, because it eliminates most of the market either way. COD King is in the first group — we work inside Shopify checkout and do not replace it, which is a deliberate limitation.

3. Which verification channels does it actually run?

Nearly every app lists OTP. The channels differ in ways that matter.

SMS is universal and cheap, and in India it is competing with heavy promotional traffic. Response rates are the weakest of the three.

WhatsApp generally performs best in India, but the detail to check is whether the app uses the official WhatsApp Business API. Unofficial implementations are cheaper and carry a real risk of the number being blocked — which takes your verification channel down without warning.

Automated voice call, or IVR, reaches customers who ignore text entirely. Fewer apps offer it; HillTeck is the one most consistently cited for it, and if your customer base skews toward older or less app-literate buyers it can outperform both text channels. We do not offer IVR.

The right answer is usually more than one channel with a fallback sequence, because treating non-response on a single channel as refusal will cost you real orders.

4. Who pays for the messages?

Almost every app in this category is free to install, which tells you nothing. Messaging is the real cost and it is charged in two different models.

Some apps include messaging in their plan at a per-message or bundled rate. Others require you to connect your own provider — MSG91, Twilio, or similar — and bill you separately for messages.

Bring-your-own-provider is cheaper at volume and more work to set up. Included messaging is simpler and usually dearer per message. Work out your cost per verified order at your actual monthly volume under each model before comparing plan prices, because the plan price is frequently the smaller number.

5. Is it built for your market?

COD markets are not interchangeable. India needs pincode logic, UPI, Indian payment gateways, WhatsApp, and Hindi and regional language support. The Gulf needs Arabic, right-to-left layouts, and different gateways. Southeast Asia is different again.

An app whose installs are overwhelmingly in one market will have the deepest features for it and thin coverage elsewhere. If you sell in one COD market, choose the app built for it. If you sell across several, the multi-market apps — Releasit and EasySell are the usual candidates — are a better fit than any single-market specialist, including us.

What to verify yourself

Vendor pages, ours included, are marketing. Four checks take ten minutes and are worth more than any comparison article.

Read the Shopify App Store listing, not the vendor site. The listing carries the review count and rating Shopify verifies. Where a vendor’s own site quotes different figures from its listing, trust the listing.

Read the one and two-star reviews, sorted by recent. The five-star reviews tell you the app works when it works. The recent negative reviews tell you how it fails and how support responds, which is what you actually need to know.

Check review recency, not just volume. An app with 2,000 reviews mostly from two years ago and an app with 500 from the last six months are different propositions.

Install two and run them for a fortnight. They are free to install. Measure RTO rate, verification response rate, and confirmed delivery rate against your baseline. Two weeks of your own data settles the question in a way no article can, and it is the only method in this list that accounts for your specific catalogue and customers.

The main options, by where they are strongest

Review counts and ratings below are as published on the Shopify App Store and move constantly — check the listing rather than relying on these.

Releasit COD Form & Upsells is the largest app in the category by review volume by a wide margin, carries Shopify’s Built for Shopify designation, and supports many languages. Strongest for custom COD forms, dropshipping funnels, upsells, and multi-market stores. If you want a replacement checkout form rather than native checkout, it is the default comparison point.

HillTeck is India-focused and the app most consistently associated with IVR voice verification alongside WhatsApp and SMS. Strongest where voice verification matters.

Kwik COD by GoKwik sits in the checkout-replacement tier with COD risk intelligence built into a broader conversion product. Strongest for larger Indian brands already considering a checkout change.

EasySell combines COD form, upsells, and partial payment in one app with multi-language and multi-currency support. Strongest for stores serving several COD markets from one backend.

Cashfree CODFIRM comes from a large Indian payment processor and focuses on verification and RTO intelligence. Strongest for lean setups already inside the Cashfree ecosystem.

COD King — ours — works inside Shopify’s native checkout and covers OTP and WhatsApp verification, COD fees, COD rules by pincode and order value, partial payments, prepaid conversion, and prefilled addresses in one app. Strongest for established Indian D2C brands that want payment-mix control and verification together without replacing checkout.

When COD King is the wrong choice

Worth stating plainly, because installing the wrong app wastes a fortnight.

If you want a custom one-page COD form instead of Shopify’s checkout, we do not do that, and Releasit or EasySell will serve you better. If IVR voice verification is central to your plan, we do not offer it. If you need deep support for a non-Indian market, our strength is India and a multi-market app will fit better. And if you are running a handful of orders a day, you may not need any app yet — manual confirmation over WhatsApp costs nothing and works fine until volume makes it impractical.

If you are an Indian D2C brand doing meaningful COD volume on Shopify’s native checkout, and your problem is some combination of fake orders, RTO, and a payment mix tilted too far toward cash, that is the case we are built for. You can check our Shopify App Store listing and read the recent reviews — including the critical ones — before you install anything.
